Remember what's important. Collect moments - not things.

"Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment," (NIV)
We are all going to die and will reach our final destination. It will either be one place or the other and will come when you take your last breath. After that you have no choice. Be wise, trust Christ as your Savior and set your course to live a godly life.

I desire to mirror what is "good” and reflect God’s light so that one day, when breath leaves my body and my firstborn son embraces me again, I will stand before the Lamb of God to hear, “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:21 NKJV)

Dealing with Tommy's death this last year has left me wondering what Gramma Campbell felt as she dealt with the death of her son, my father, who was just 23 years old when he died in 1959.

Thinking of mom today as I write the eulogy for tomorrow's service and remember her telling me about the time she and Danielle, who was just 6 or 7 years old, watched the movie Beaches. At the end of the movie, Hillary (played by Barbara Hershey) dies and leaves her daughter in the care of CC Bloom (played by Bette Midler). Mom said Danielle turned to her and said, "Auntie Sue would want me, huh, Gramma."

Today I found myself thinking about how Tommy would come up when I was holding one of the kids, put his arms around me and start an argument. "My Gramma," he would say, knowing that it would prompt a rebuttal. "MY Gramma," they would argue. Back and forth they'd go until Tommy finally gave in and said, "Okay, your Gramma but my Mommy."

Today would have been Tommy's 33rd birthday. I'm thinking about how he would call the office, ask for me and when asked who was calling would say, "Her favorite son."

Sometimes I wonder how we became such a "throw away" society. I remember my Gramma Paris saving leftover thread from sewing machine bobbins that were almost empty. She figured that she could use the shorter lenghts for sewing buttons on shirts or dresses. We had "button boxes" for saving buttons that had popped off, we repaired and patched clothing, hand-me-down's were common, leftover food never got thrown away. Everything was saved and re-used. Gramma was raised during the depression when things weren't so "aplenty" and harder to come by. I still have my button box, I repair ripped seams, I still save spare change and still roll pennies.

Thinking about Cody and the CD that he spent so much time putting together in memory of Tommy. Jackie said that she told him what a nice gesture it was and he said, "Mom...it's Tommy." I'm touched beyond words.

One day after loading his kids into the backseat of my car and distributing kisses, David hugged me and said, "Mama, you know how you always say, 'I love you so much'? I really didn't know how much so much was until I had kids."

When I was little I remember stacking and saving our newspapers in the garage, then going door-to-door with a wagon to collect even more, so that we could haul them to the neighborhood school [Taft Elementary] every few months for a paper drive. I wonder why we don't see paper drives as much anymore.

1LT Robert J. DiTomassoUSAF 07-29-66 LAOS
That's what the inscription reads on his POW/MIA bracelet. Bobby was born August 7, 1941 in Buffalo, New York to Alvin & Mafalda DiTomasso and was officially declared dead on March 21, 1979 by the U.S. military, even though his remains have never been returned home. The date on the bracelet was the day his plane went down over Laos during the Vietnam conflict. I wore Bobby's MIA bracelet in the mid-70's and corresponded with his mother. I was just a teenager then and still in high school, but still have her notes and cards that always ended with the same phrase, "Pray for Peace". My bracelet eventually broke in half from wear and I have bought a replacement bracelet that catches my eye every once in a while when I open my jewelry box. When it does, I find myself thinking of Bobby. His mother, Mafalda, spent the last 25 years of her life searching for her son. In a 1988 interview for the Buffalo News she stated, "You gotta keep on the go all the time and it costs a lot of money." She had recently made the trip to Hawaii from her home in New York to finally welcome Bobby home only to find that he wasn't there, nor were his remains or any new information. Malfada DiTommaso died in 1991, never knowing what happened to her beloved son. As a mother with three sons of my own, I cannot begin to understand the pain and heartache that haunted her, although my heart aches for her loss. I imagine there was no escaping it, day or night. Perhaps her focused efforts and determination to find Bobby was the only way she could deal with the reality of the nightmare. Bobby is still MIA - Don't ever forget.
